Chinking for Log Homes
Chinking as it is known today is a flexible sealant also known as synthetic mortar and is used to seal the joints between logs.
Chinking Notes on Joint Design
Chinking joint width should be between 1/4" and 2" and 4 times the anticipated movement. For chink joints 1" or more, the depth should be 3/8" to 1/2". The depth of chinking joints less than 1" wide should be half the width but no less than 1/4". (Chinking joint depth should be 1/4"-1/2".)

Log-Gevity Log Chinking Glide
Log-Gevity™ Log Chinking Glide (Thick)
This semi-thick water-based lubricant is used to create ease in tooling chinking. Log-Gevity™ Log Chinking Glide keeps chinking from dripping down to lower level logs which is a problem commonly encountered during the tooling process. In order to achieve the aesthetic of exposed sand aggregate, a minimal amount of tooling will still be required immediately following the initial tooling step. By using Log Chinking Glide (light viscosity), this affect can be easily accomplished. Man hours and clean-up will be reduced dramatically by substituting the Log-Gevity™ Log Chinking Glide for the standard tooling lubricants. Coverage: 150-200 sq. ft. per gallon.
Cleanup: Soap and water. 1-gal. $18.55 5-gal. $93.01

Log Jam Chinking is an acrylic elastic joint sealant for those who want to give their log home the traditional, historic look of mortar chinking. It stretches and compresses as logs shrink and swell, up to 100% of its original joint size. Log Jam has excellent memory. That means it can absorb movement over and over again without tearing, pulling away, or looking "Stretched Out." And, because the majority of the movement log homes experience occurs during the first few years, Log Jam is guaranteed to absorb log movement for 10 years. It tightly grips to all species of wood (including oily woods like cedar) and most stains. Log Jam has a 1 hour fire rating and is the only chinking product on the market that is UL approved. Recommended for use with Backer Rod. Application Temperature: 40°-90° F. How Much Do I Need?
